What is an OCT?
What does it Do?
In many ways it is like an Ultrasound or an X-ray.
The OCT we have can measure down to just 5 microns. A micron is 1/1000th of a millimetre. At this level the computer can actually measure changes in the thickness of individual cell layers in the retina.
One of the most important uses for an OCT is to measure changes over time. Many eye disease take years to show themselves. Having an OCT allows us to measure very, very small changes that may occur over many, many years. It is these very small changes that that can cause blindness.
When do we recommend an OCT Test?
- Those over 50 usually once every 2 years.
- Those over 60 Annually.
- Those with Glaucoma (twice a year) or a family history of Glaucoma annually.
- People with Diabetes annually.
- Anyone with a Family history of Macular Disease or whom exhibit macular changes.
- Anyone who has had a concussion.
- Mid to high range Myopes (people with shortsightedness).
- Anyone who has had cataract surgery.
- Anyone who has suddenly experienced a loss of central vision or has blurred central vision that came on suddenly.
Why have you probably never heard about an OCT?
The advantage to using an OCT is that certain diseases like Glaucoma or retinal changes such as Macular Oedema & Retinal Detachments are found much more readily using an OCT. Like most things early detection leads to better outcomes which is why we have invested in an OCT.
What happens when I get an OCT?
An image is taken using a scanning laser and the computer then works out the rest including all the measurements we need to assess your eye’s health.
What does an OCT cost?
OCT’s scans are part of our standard eye examination.
All eye testing, including OCT scans, are Bulk Bille.
